Ken Barr, Jr. and the Student Strengths Ambassadors at Kalamazoo Valley Community College are doing some great things on campus. Check our their site: https://www.kvcc.edu/services/strengths/.

We will be rollling out Strengthsquest to our TRIO students in late Feb/early March. Any comments/suggestions/outlines for promoting and implementing Strengths will be greatly appreciated.

I will give the Intro to Strengths presentation five times over the next week in class. At the beginning of each semester, I invite all faculty/staff on campus to attend these presentations for either refresher or initial information.

How do you keep your Strengths initiative alive on your campus?

I attended my first Strengths Conference and it was very exciting. I wanted to clone myself so I could attend every session. I went with a small group from my community college district. The cost of this conference is so reasonable we were able to bring 5 people. I will go back.

I have worked with groups that have both taken on their own as a class assignment and who have taken it as a group in a computer lab. I think both ways work. I personally like the group setting as we usually take 15-20 minutes prior to the assessment to do an introductory activity and explain the Strengths concept,

Sheila,

I tell my students that the assessment will take them from 45 minutes to an hour and they need to be undisturbed. I encourage them to take the assessment on campus if they will be bothered at home. I also explain that they will have only 20 seconds to answer each question and they should not answer neutral too many times.

Most of them are able to complete the assessment on their own, but I have taken an entire group to a computer lab and we all did it together.

Hope this helps,
Lori

The small 10 minute sessions at the beginning or ending of class seem to help them focus on their Strengths.

Our students take it on their own, and have forgotton what I told them by then. I like your ideas on using the strengths during the semester - thanks!

I don't worry about them reading the directions, because I use the instrument in the classroom.

I start the first week in my class using Strengths. I use Picture of Excellence, Strengths Finder Reflection, Verifying Your Signature Themes and Exploring My Signature Themes. I then try to use small to minute exercises throughout the semester to help bring Strengths to the forefront.

When I am talking to students one on one about issues they maybe having in the classroom, I start with asking about their top 5 Strengths and how they might leverage their Strengths to accomplish their task.

I think StrengthsQuest is a very valuable tool, especially for under-resourced students. I'd love to hear ideas on how folks explain the assessment before the students take it (my students DON'T always read the directions).
