Most of the members of Strengths School are educators and are using StrengthsQuest with the students they work with. Others of us are counselors and therapists. I would like to provide a forum for us counselors to share how we use CSF with our clients.

I will begin with a brief discussion about how I utilize CSF in counseling with my clients.

The Initial Strengths Interview has two parts to it: 1) Picture of Excellence. 2) I then give the client a slide from a power point from one of the Webinars -- At Your Best, with all the scattered options. I ask them to identify three of these that come most naturally. (Usually this opens a whole new world to the clients. I often get the objection that we're not supposed to be talking about these things in counseling! I smile and suggest that we try something different.)

2) The client will purchase either the SF 2.0 book (from the local Barnes & Noble store) or the SQ code (from me) and bring the report to the next appointment.

3) we will then start working through the following: a) read through the descriptions of each theme and talk about how they have used these themes both recently and in the past; b) Your Greatest Success and What Caused It; c) Signature Themes Worksheet.

4) After this we focus on the more specific needs of the client. These needs usually fall in three categories:
a) issues with self-confidence. (the main trigger for this focus is the response, "I don't have any talents . . . I can't do anything well."); b) issues with motivation and academic performance; and c) future planning (college or career). Intervention: "Five Questions for Career Planning."

How are you using CSF with your clients?
