About Me:
I am director of career services at the State University of New York at Canton. Having come through a counseling program I was all about "Why?" questions. I found studies in optimism first, then positive psychology, and finally strengths and I have not been so excited professionally in years. Personally, I am a packrat of useless facts of knowledge (Mental_Floss magazine is AWESOME!). I am a bit of a renaissance guy who majored in chemistry and literature in college, am an amateur photographer, dabble at carpentry, garden, cook, and am doing my own remodeling work on my 120 year old house. Oh, and I have a wicked, dark sense of humor...bring it on!

Hi, Julie,
I have had pretty good response from students. I have used StrengthsQuest with individual students in my office, and have used the 'philosophy' of strengths in classroom presentations to our remediation students. Our school is not selective at all. We also pull students from social extremes: inner city NY and very rural northern NY state. Interestingly, the two groups have much in common as they have not been encouraged and developed as middle and upper class kids are (read sociologist Annette Lareau work on parenting styles). For many of my students they notion that they have unique strengths is completely foreign and thus...empowering. The other place I have had good experiences with Strengths work is in my division. That's a pretty general answer to your question. Anything more specific?

David,

Hi! I wanted to introduce myself to you because you seem like you have such an energetic persona! I work at Tennessee State University in the College of Business, and I am working on a pilot program to incorporate Strengths into our freshmen orientation curriculum. I'm interested to find out what successes that you've had working with students in career services and Strengths.

Best,
Julie Roberts
