Hi Fursey,
I signed up on this site and then I was overtaken with school work.

I started Strengths with a Teaching Team here at North Lake College. It has since been taken over by Organization and Development. I am currently attempting to write an in-house grand to address retention for students in our Early Alert Program. This is for students who are on the first level of academic probation.

I would have loved to get my PhD in Strengths, but I did not want to start over.

You mean the SF meetings we will have during the next year or on-line? Sorry, it is late in the afternoon and my brain is in neutral. Just making sure. And if there is a "group" on line, I guess I missed that part of your presentation. Can I get a tutorial? :)

Fursey,

I love how your district is incorporating strengths engagement specialists. How exciting! I can't wait to see how it unfolds in your schools.

Thank you, good to be here. I thought I had joined the BISD group as well. Let me know if not and if that is the case, how do I go about joining?

Hey Fursey!

Sorry it's taken me this long to respond, but I was overwhelmed with testing last week and couldn't focus long enough to put two sentences together to answer your questions. Things are a bit more clear now, so here goes:

Yes, we are still continuing to learn and understand our staff's strengths. In fact, Mrs. Solley and I are currently having end of the year conferences with everyone on our staff. During these conferences, we are using the questions you provided us for summatives. The questions seem to be very thought provoking and have given me a further insight into the person responding. We end the conferences with a strengths quote that they really seem to respond to well. I think these conferences are a step in the right direction for our growth in strengths knowledge and understanding, as well as a great way to end the year on a positive note!

Thanks for checking on us, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hello Fursey,
I think that your idea is great! However, most admission officers probably wouldn't know anything about it unless they are familiar with strengths. I would definitely encourage your students to put their strengths on their applications if they are applying to a strengths-based school (like Azusa Pacific in California).
We use strengths at our college, Atlanta Christian College, and we would love to see that information on their applications!
Does any of this information help?
Thanks,
Stacy

Hello Fursey,

With the seminars for our most at-risk populations, we use the SQ along with the LASSI. SQ is the good news and LASSI most often serves as the bad news. We then try to look at how we can use our strengths to improve the areas of LASSI that serve as trouble spots.

With our learning communities, we explore strengths throughout the semester...how they make us who we are...how we can apply them to help us academically and socially...and some groups choose to look at their career choices in terms of their strengths.

I hope that help!

Fursey, It was so nice of you to mention the Theme Insight Cards. They were so much fun to make. I spend much of my time either coaching people around their strengths or teaching people how to coach others using a strengths-based approach, As a result, I am always making new discoveries about people and the amazing instrument Don Clifton created. I am in the process of creasting another deck of cards which I hope will be helpful for people as well. Best wishes. Curt Liesveld

The presentations are 3-5 minutes long and the students are asked to give a creative representation to the rest of the class describing their strengths and how they work together for the individual. We have had some wonderful presentations. Some of the greats: A student showed how learning how to play the guitar related to his talent themes, this year we had a rap that had the whole group on their feet, one Japanese student described the code of the sumurai and his talent themes and then had the entire group make origami samurai hats with newsprint. They are all good in their own way. It not only helps in gaining self-awareness but also works on their presentation skills in a non-threatening way. It has led to some fantastic debrief discussion around teamwork and emotional intelligence topics too. Hope this is helpful.
