"Hi Jessica-- The College Access grant is funded by a non-profit organization in Nebraska. Funds are awarded depending on the size of the school; our school (with a population of about 1600) receives $25,000 per year for four years. Funds can be…"

I teach 9th grade Earth and Physical Science at Lincoln High School. In addition to science, I also work with the Student Council and am the College Access Grant Coordinator. I love finding out what kids are good at and then using those talents to learn and understand science.

Hello Malinda, thanks for sharing your insight on the College Access grants—very helpful! Sounds like the grant has been a great resource; do you use the College Access grant to find Strengths programs? I am also curious how Lincoln High School is incorporating Strengths. Is it school-wide or are you simply implementing it into your own classroom?

Actually, I’ll be graduating from Northwestern College in Saint Paul in May and am working on a Strengths Research project. But, I grew up about 45 minutes from Northwestern in Orange City so I have several good friends that currently attend or graduated from Orange City!

Looking forward to hearing more about your Strengths experience!

That's the exact program I teach on my campus. A very effective program.

I just did the Strengths Assessment with my students and will continue to work with them on it for the rest of the semester. I hope to take the kids on a leadership workshop in a few weeks.

Have you looked into AVID? It's a great program designed to do exactly what you're College Access Grant wants to do. My school just started an AVID class last year and I went to the training as part of the site team. It's well-developed (so you don't have to re-invent the wheel) and well worth looking into. You can go to www.avid.org to check it out.

Welcome to Strengths School, Malinda! Great to have you on board. I'm a former English teacher (just quit to begin my doctoral program in Counseling Psychology) and am definitely interested in how others are helping students in high schools learn about and cultivate their strengths. If you have any ideas you'd be willing to share, I'm all ears!
