Ken Robinson: How to escape education's death valley

Hi,

I noticed a few of Sir Ken's TED video's in Strengths School but did not see this recent TED talk from April 2013 so I thought I'd share: http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_how_to_escape_education_s_death_valley.html

My short summary:

"There are 3 principles on which human life flourishes and they are contradicted by the culture of education and under which…

Tinogona: "It is Achievable"

It is my vision that every child in Africa should have the chance to attend a school where they can learn how to read, write, do math and be proud of themselves. In my travels I see little girls with the same dreams, but there are too few resources to educate them. Educators play a fundamental role in the…

Affirmation

It is fun to think about specific ways to affirm people's strengths.I find myself daily looking for ways to inspire others by affirmingwhat is right with them. When this is done consistently, people startto believe it.  When they start to believe it, you start to see adeeper investment in their work, hobbies, ministry, and familialinteraction. This deeper investment creates a trust and safety within acommunity that leads to a sense of value and purpose. Once someoneexperiences the joy of…

Transformation

Today it hit me...I lead others toward a treasure chest and show them the wealth inside but often fail to look at it myself. I believe with such conviction that discovering, affirming, and developing strengths will liberate a person's soul, but I continue to weigh myself down with feelings of inadequacy and doubt. If I truly believe in what I have been teaching others I am going to need to start taking my own advice: You are uniquely gifted to impact the world around you in a way that no one… Continue

India Cultural Tour is a Lifetime Experience For Tourists

It is well said that to know the culture of the country means to know the country. And it is perhaps even truer in case of India because here one can experience a multitude of different cultures and traditions. It is a fact that different parts of the country have different culture and tradition and one will get to see a difference of architectural patterns, different kind of festivals, different local dialects, different kind of people and a difference in weather in between different cultural… Continue

Are You in the Right Collaboration Environment?

More than team building and management.

Collaboration is, to me, about the division of labor (as the word's etymology implies) that leads to cooperation toward a common goal. There are two models of collaboration and team-building that I believe speak to the spirit of consensual cooperation.

One is Christensen's model of consensus-driven cooperation*. From that view, the effectiveness of collaboration depends on how well one executes two factors. The first is to…

Isolating Themes of Talent--Strategic

Talent Theme Panel Questions

How do you personally define this theme? What does it mean to you?

This is so ingrained in how I think and function that I have had to reflect many hours on how I actually us this theme. For me, not only it is a pattern of thinking that allows me to see potential and possibilities very quickly, it is also a part of how I relate to other people, the language I use, how I present myself and when. So I weigh all of my options quickly and then jump to… Continue

My Favorite Activity

I really enjoyed the "How Full Is Your Bucket" activity. It was an encouraging activity that really help to build relationships among the students. It encouraged students to stay positive and to encourage each other by filling buckets instead of dipping out of them.

Favorite Activity

Out of the Strengths activities that we did in class, I my favorite was the Scavenger Hunt. My class used this as an icebreaker and a networking activity. The first week of class we did a different icebreaker activitiy, but the Scavenger Hunt was a couple of weeks into the semester where students are starting to get to know each other, but are still not bonded. The Scavenger Hunt made them get up, move around, and talk to other students. After they completed the activity they then broke into… Continue
